There are as many types of websites as there are types of human activity. As the size of a website grows so does the need for better searchability and browsability. As the size of a website grows even more and as the intended audience of the website’s content becomes more diversified, so does the need for user-driven customization and personalization.
The terms ‘portal’ tend to be used interchangeably and often in combination to indicate a service providing browser-based access to information resources and applications. In data networking a portal is a device that translates a data stream from one protocol to another, without adding any additional value in the conversion process. The notion of a portal is something more than a simple switch or exchange, and usually provides a higher level of combination and personalization.
THE EMERGENCE OF THE Portals
As the 21st century came to a close, the phenomenal growth of information technology applications, seemed limitless. libraries, like all sectors of the new information center, experienced remarkable growth in the number of digital resources that could be made available to users. In this case; it is declarable; the libraries known as some information storage and need to have something that makes the references and facilities accessible. Many library websites grew quickly as new sources of digital information .
In order to customizing and Integrating the access point; the portals emerged assisting to the process of retrievaling information and data.
Some Definition of Portal
Doorway, Entrance, or Gate
ü The primary goal of most portals is ease-of-use.
ü One can enter the web from many different portals.
ü to describe a website.
ü a portal is a site that acts as a gateway to online features.
ü To present information from diverse sources in a unified way.
ü To help editors find related projects and things.
Some Differences Between Website And Portal.
The Portal and website can be differentiated as :
A portal is generally a vehicle or medium by which to gain access to a huge number of 'services'. A web site is a destination in itself.
In Other Words;
Web is like a city. Portal is like a gate. One can enter the city via a gate and wonder around wherever one wishes and can exit from any gate he wishes.
A website is a destination in its own right. It is an end point for the visitor. The creators have built the site to keep you there. A portal on the other hand is not a destination as such. Rather it is more like a bus terminus, signposting users onwards to other places.

• It provides more efficient access to e-resources
• It improves service delivery
• It allows the library service to be seen to have an important role in delivering learning and teaching
• It offers an opportunity to embed training and guidance with the resources
A library portal can be made up of three types of content:
1. Information about the library - staff directories, departmental descriptions, maps of the building, etc.
2. Electronic versions of traditional library services - online tutorials, book renewals, interlibrary loan requests and status reports, requests for purchase, online chat/reference, virtual tours of the building(s), etc.
3. Access to library content - catalogs, indexes, full-text magazines and journals, digitized special collections, free and commercial e-books, government documents, freely accessible Internet resources, electronic encyclopedias and dictionaries, licensed content , etc.
